Amakhala Game Reserve

Amakhala Game Reserve l Eastern Cape l Game drive

Amakhala Game Reserve is one of the premier destinations of the Eastern Cape and located only 45 minutes from Port Elizabeth.  The reserve used to be a sheep and cattle farm until 1999 and has been striving ever since to re-introduce game to the area that once roamed freely, thus making an important contribution to the conservation of the area.

You will find a range of accommodations to suit your needs:

Bush Lodge
This lodge offers a 5 star romantic getaway in the form of luxury tents overlooking a popular water hole. Dark wood finishes and thatched roof of the central facility gives this lodge an unmistakable African feel.

Leeuwenbosch
The historical Country House was built in 1908 and offers comfort and space in a true country setting. Country House caters for the whole family, offering family suites, baby sitting and endless hours of fun on the expansive lawns surrounding the property. The aptly named Shearer’s Lodge was once in the midst of sheep country – the old barn has been lovingly restored to offer an ambience of romance and old world charm.

Reed Valley Inn
Enjoying a rich family history, Reed Valley Inn is now owned and run by the fifth generation of the Weeks family. It’s built in the colonial style and the décor is warm and homely.

Safari Lodge
Graded 5* and undoubtedly the most luxurious of Amakhala’s lodges, Safari Lodge is situated in prime game viewing country. This thatched lodge is the perfect retreat if you want to unwind in undisturbed surroundings, the only sounds coming from the monkeys playing at the small waterhole.

Woodbury Lodge
Spectacularly clinging to the edge of a cliff, enjoy unimpeded views of the Bushmans River Valley from Woodbury Lodge. The stone and thatched bedrooms are comfortable and well appointed, while the highlight of your stay will be outdoor dining in the intimate boma. Woodbury Tented Lodge looks out over the game-filled plains and is perfect for those wanting to relax while listening to the sounds of the African bush.

Carnarvon Dale
A farm style lodge offering accommodations in an old Settlers farmhouse, a Bottom House and Top House, which consists of a lovingly restored Edwardian cottage. Enjoy home cooked meals and excellent bird watching.

Quatermain’s Camp
This tented camp is decorated with military-style items dating back to the 1900’s, the kind that hunters and explorers of old preferred. Enjoy game drives, bush walks and birding safaris on the expansive reserve.

The highlight of your stay will undoubtedly be the twice daily game drives on the reserve, guided by professional rangers in open safari vehicles. The game reserve spans across 18,000ha of bushveld and hosts not only the Big 5, but also species such as hyena and bat eared fox. You can also enjoy night game drives, guided nature walks and boat trips up the Bushman’s River.

Amakhala is FTTSA accredited for its efforts in the fields of conservation and social upliftment. The Amakhala Conservation Centre was established in 2003 and aims, amongst others, to create a stronger awareness and concern for our natural habitats. Educational visits are attended by local school children during events such as National Water Week, World Environment Day and Arbor Week. The social upliftment aspect entails the ongoing education and training of Amakhala staff, as well as strengthening relationships and developing a sense of community.
