Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill are two luxurious bush homes situated in the Waterberg region of South Africa, about 3 hours north of Johannesburg. The lodges are owned and managed by 2 passionate conservationists, Ant and Tessa Baber, whose families settled in the area in 1886 and handed down their love of Africa to the generations after them.
Ant’s Nest was built first and has a truly African feel, offering wide verandas and built mainly from wood and stone. There are only 6 suites, accommodating a maximum of 12 guests. The main house features four bedrooms, two upstairs – including the honeymoon suite - and two downstairs. The other two rooms are set away from the main house – all the rooms are comfortably appointed and feature its own veranda, perfect for enjoying the stunning sunsets or romantic evenings in.
Ant’s Hill followed in 2003 and is spectacularly built on the edge of a cliff, offering 6 luxurious suites. The rooms are spacious and colourfully decorated – vast sliding doors allow the smells and sounds of the bush inside. Glorious, sunken baths adorn the bathrooms. The central area hangs precariously over the edge of the cliff, allowing for indulgent early morning breakfasts as you enjoy the crisp morning air.
Horse riding is very popular at both lodges, and with good reason. Riding gives you the opportunity to get very close to the game, creating unforgettable memories. Two guides will accompany each ride to ensure that slower riders don’t dampen the excitement for more experienced riders. There are a number of children’s ponies available, making this a true family experience. Game drives are offered in 4x4 Land Cruisers and go out twice during the day, as well as at night for spotting those elusive nocturnal species. Game walks are very popular as they enable you to get up close with the South African fauna and flora. Depending on your level of fitness, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll or an energetic hike.
Children are very welcome at both lodges and this is the ideal place to educate your children about the wonders of Africa. Kids are able to join their parents on all game activities and special ponies will ensure endless fun if your child is interested in riding. Special ‘bug walks’ are also available. Come and let your children be inspired by Africa!
