D’Ouwe Werf

 D’Ouwe Werf

D'Ouwe Werf Country Inn is the best way to get a feel for Stellenbosch's marriage of old and new. Established in 1802, d'Ouwe Werf is the oldest inn in South Africa. The inn stands on the hallowed grounds of the town's first church, which dates back to 1686, and the remains of the church can still be seen beneath the floorboards of the inn's kitchen. Though the inn's foundations are ancient, there is certainly nothing primitive about the present building facilities, which are rich and sumptuous. No two rooms are alike - d'Ouwe Werf freely furnishes each room in either Georgian, Victorian or traditional Cape style. The hotel's 32 rooms are spread over five buildings, each looking out onto either the lush, verdant garden and courtyard or Church Street.

Traditional South African fare - babotie, smoorsnoek, Bilton pâté and Cape brandy pudding, to name a few dishes - is served up at the 1802 Restaurant, a Stellenbosch culinary institution in its own right. Hearty eaters will find South African dishes satisfying, while diners who prefer lighter meals can tuck into Continental alternatives. The extensive Stellenbosch wine-of-origin list makes it possible for d'Ouwe Werf Restaurant to be one of the best places where one can enjoy some of the finest wine this area has to offer.
