Damaraland Camp

Damaraland Camp | Namibia

Damaraland Camp in remote north western Namibia is a rare project which integrates the local Nama community, wildlife conservation and environment. It is voted the most successful eco-tourism venture in Namibia. Owned and run by the local Nama community, wildlife is seen as an economic resource rather than a threat to farming and livelihoods.

Damaraland Camp is situated in the Huab River Valley, a pristine wilderness area about 90km from Namibia’s west coast.  It is also one of the driest and most desolate areas in all of Africa. Accommodation consists of 10 thatched units built on raised wooden decks, affording magnificent views over the plains and the peaks of the Brandberg Mountains. Each room has an en suite bathroom with shower only, a walk-in dressing area and built in fan. Guests can enjoy the bar and restaurant facilities in the main area, or relax by the lodge pool on hot summers days. Meals are served in the restaurant or in the open air boma, while gazing at the stars on a clear night.

Activities focus on exploring the fauna and flora of the Huab river system – twice daily nature drives are conducted by experienced guides and a favourite is to track the well adapted desert elephants that roam the plains. Gemsbok, kudu and springbok are regularly seen, and if you’re lucky you’ll come across lion or black rhino. Game walks are also conducted, as are trips to Twyfelfontein to see the well preserved San rock art. The birdlife is prolific with more than 240 species recorded in the Torra Conservancy.
