Elephant House/Eastern Cape. This charmingly colonial country lodge of Elephant House is located just beyond the citrus groves of Sunday River Valley, and provides an extensive array of safari and hiking services to gratify any nature lover. As one might expect from the name, visitors to this hotel are, more often than not avid seekers of just the slightest close encounter of the pachyderm kind. Elephant sightings are fairly common here, but it's also often said that nothing will really prepare for that actual initial thrill of seeing this magnificent land mammal for the first time.

Hop into an open-top jeep with a knowledgeable ranger from Elephant House Safari Company, and a few minutes' drive away is Addo Elephant National Park, where the largest concentration of elephants in South Africa (over 450 of them) resides with herds of buffalo, black rhinos, zebra and 150 species of birds. For the adventurous wishing to be even closer to the wildlife, there is also the 'Walk with the Elephants' tour, where visitors are taken through the bush on guided trails with elephants and their experienced minders.

Back at the Elephant House, there are plenty of opportunities to relax and unwind after an action-packed day of activities. This cosy, thatched lodge is adorned with African art, antiques and Persian rugs, exuding an evocative, romantic old-world style that will truly make this a place of comfortable refuge and classic indulgence for visitors.

Its two outdoor pools, nestled within lush gardens, are ideal spots for guests to soak up some lazy sunshine and kick back while sipping on cocktails.
