
The Kosi Forest Nature Reserve is 11,000ha in size and has been incorporated into the Isimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site. Some 250 bird species are to be found here, including the rare Flufftail amongst others, along with the hippo and crocodile you’ll find basking in the sun on the lake shores. Come and experience this pristine wilderness area on the shores of the Kosi Lake – its location close to the Mozambican border gives it a sultry climate and therefore makes it an excellent year-round destination.
The lodge itself comprises of 16 rooms, each comfortably appointed and carefully positioned to ensure maximum privacy for its guests. The thatched suites are spacious and exude an air of romance – the rooms feature canvas sides which can be rolled up to let the forest and its magical splendour inside. The open air bathrooms are reed enclosed and positioned under the huge trees, allowing for total peace and relaxation.
The Kosi lake system consists of a series of interconnected lakes, making it perfect for exploration by boat. Discover the intricate lakes and channels, enjoy a picnic lunch and end of your day with a swim at Bhanga Nek. A highlight of your day will be a visit to the fish traps – let the locals show you how the traps are made, and accompany them when they check the traps before dinner! During the months from November – January it is possible to watch hundreds of Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles come to these shores to lay their eggs, an incredible sight! The utmost care is taken to ensure the environment is not disturbed.
Note that Kosi Forest Lodge is only accessible by 4x4 vehicle. If you are travelling in a non 4x4 vehicle, you will be directed to a secure parking area, from where you will be collected by lodge representatives. The pick up times are 12h00 and 16h00 – pick ups outside of these times will incur an additional charge. From the parking area, you will proceed in an open 4x4 vehicle – the lodge is about 25 minutes away.
