Kampala

Kampala City | Uganda

Uganda's capital city, Kampala, is a refreshing alternative to other cities in East Africa. Once known as the Garden City due to all the green spaces, it has been a tough road back from the blitzing it received in the bloody civil war which followed Idi Amin's dictatorship. However it is now a very pleasant city to spend a day or so wandering around. The traffic can get a little overwhelming, but if you step away from the main routes, you will discover interesting markets, historical sites, excellent restaurants and a thriving young middle class.

Additional Information

Of particular interest to visitors are the Kasubi Tombs, the burial site of the Kabakas (kings) of Baganda, the traditional Kingdom in this area. The tombs are housed in a palace built by Kabaka Mutesa in 1882 and the remains of this building are virtually intact. The tombs are tended by female descendants of the wives of the Kabakas.

Forty kilometres from Kampala is Entebbe, a pleasant small town on the edge of Lake Victoria, and home to Uganda's International Airport. Here you can visit the excellent Botanical Gardens as well as the Entebbe Wildlife Centre where you can catch a glimpse of the rare Shoebill Stork - if you haven't managed to see one on your safari…
