Perched on Mt Waller, 5000 sq ft above the northern lakeshore, Livingstonia provides insight into Malawi's colonial past.
The mission, following in David Livingstone's footsteps, initially failed twice at the lakeshore due to malaria. Whilst quite run down now, the sense of history is palpable and makes for an interesting change of scene.
Getting there is an experience in itself. Accessed by one of Malawi's most dramatic roads - steep switchbacks snake upwards from the beach at Chitimba.
Visit the mission on a day trip or stay at Lukwe Permaculture Camp in undisturbed forest with views over the lake and nearby Manchewe falls.
