Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest, at almost 4,000 square kilometres.
Historically Murchison Falls NP was one of the most renowned parks in East Africa for game numbers, especially well known for huge elephant herds. Unfortunately the civil strife that affected Uganda from the late sixties to the late eighties saw all protection for the park all but disappear and with it the wildlife numbers dwindled. The good news is that since the early nineties, the game has recovered remarkably well and on a game drive you can expect to see lion, elephant, buffalo, many antelope species and Rothschild giraffe (the only place to see giraffe in Uganda). In addition the forests are host to several primate species, and the birdlife along the Nile River is excellent.
The Nile divides the park into its northern and southern sections, most impressively at the Murchison Falls themselves where the broad meandering river is forced through a 7m gap to produce one of the most powerful water flows anywhere in the world. The boat trip to the base of the Falls offers spectacular views as well as good sightings of hippos, crocodiles and the chance to spot a rare Shoebill Stork…
