The Quirimbas Archipelago consists of perhaps two dozen islands strewn along the 400km coastline of northern Mozambique. Some of the islands - such as Ibo have been important trading posts long before even the Portuguese arrived in the 17th Century. Others continue to enjoy enough isolation to help any aspiring Robinson Crusoe shiver with anticipation...
All of the coastlines share dazzling warm turquoise waters which lap the purest white sand beaches. The Scuba Diving is some of the best to be found anywhere in the world. Fresh fish and seafood is caught daily and prepared with Mozambican flair - perhaps on the barbecue on the beach or even laid out as a private picnic for two on a deserted sandy spit!
Accommodation
There are some wonderful accommodation options in the Quirimbas. Most are remote islands with intimate luxury lodges such as Medjumbe and Vamizi. Historic Ibo Island is a must for anyone interested in the colonial history of this area. Our personal favourite is Guludo Beach Lodge - located on a stunning beach on the mainland and therefore with access to the fascinating mangrove coastal systems, and the relatively undiscovered wildlife of the Quirimbas National Park.
Activities
The Scuba Diving on the reef is considered some of the best in the world. Opportunities for snorkelling abound, especially when combined with sailing trips on an authentic Arab Dhow or a picnic on a deserted spit of sand. There are wonderful opportunities to engage with local communities at Guludo and Ibo Island, either for a game of football or a session of local beauty treatments! For those interested in fishing, you can take to the high seas and land some big game fish!
