Sossusvlei and Deadvlei

Petrified Tree in Deadvlei | Sossusvlei | Namibia

An early start is required.  But having witnessed the sun rise over Sossusvlei: enormous apricot dunes with gracefully curving ridges, extending endlessly to the sea, you will agree that you did the right thing.  Located in the heart of the oldest desert in the world (the Namib), Sossusvlei is an iconic destination in Namibia.  Come and visit it with Face Africa, and we will ensure that you don't miss the fascinating side trip to Deadvlei, the valley next door now blocked off by advancing sand dunes.  Here you will see the shimmering desert heat across the valley floor, and the old petrified trees rising with twisted beauty out of the wilderness that surrounds them.

The Desert Tour

No matter where you are staying, we will encourage you to take a tour of the desert around this area.  Only this way can you really grasp what you are seeing and understand the myriad of creatures that make up this delicate ecosystem.  You will find out how the Toktokkie beatles drink from the fog, how to recognise a baboon spider's nest and bring him up to say hello, and the symbiosis between an oryx and the !Nala plant. You'll feel like David Attenborough by the end of it!

Photography

The contrast between the orange and red sands, the brown camelthorn tree skeletons and the white dried clay against the blue desert sky can make even the most casual photographer seem like a veteran professional.  Bring all your equipment and make sure you get up early and are the last to leave.  These shots will be on your wall for a long time to come...
