Orphanage Marie Mediatrice

A beautiful two hour walk from Ruhengeri you will find the Orphanage Marie Mediatrice de toutes les grâces. In a country of orphans resulting not only because of the Genocide, this institution gives a new home to more than 50 children. One of today`s biggest challenges is to help these children get a fair start in society.

All Face Africa Tours that visit Ruhengeri will offer the chance to visit the orphanage where lively kids of every age will welcome you to join them playing and dancing in their home.

Half-day Visits:

As part of an organised Face Africa Tour, you will have the opportunity to make a half-day visit to the orphanage. This involves a trip to the market to buy some supplies as a gift to the orphan mothers (maize, oil, beans, vegetables, etc) and then a half-hour drive into the beautiful hills around Ruhengeri.
After an introduction to the children and teachers, you will be treated to a display of dancing with the children in which you can happily participate! A tour of the buildings follows, before the group will divide and assist with art projects, football, maintenance, or whatever is appropriate on the day.

Volunteering:

For those interested in spending longer at the orphanage, we can offer an extended stay in Ruhengeri as part of a tailor-made itinerary or in conjunction with a Gorilla Express Tour. You can choose whether you would like to stay on site, in a homestay in Ruhengeri or in one of the local hotels. Meals will be taken locally with the community and you will have a programme of work devised for you - depending on how long you are staying for and what is needed in the orphanage at that time.
This is a very rewarding experience and really allows you to get a very personal and local experience of Rwanda and its people.
