Gorillas & Gameparks
This unforgettable trip brings together the highlights of Uganda and Rwanda in 2 weeks. We travel from the capital city, Kampala, to the Kibale Forest Primate Reserve where we will track wild chimpanzees. Safari remains the theme as we visit the Queen Elizabeth National Park and photograph lions, elephants & hippos (among others).
We stop to explore the Rwandan capital, Kigali, before travelling up into the volcanic highlands and equatorial rainforest that forms the border area between Uganda and Rwanda. The highlight of the trip is the opportunity to track the endangered mountain Gorillas that inhabitat this region.
The trip finishes at the Source of the River Nile, where we camp overlooking the river and enjoy a number of activities. Here also we will visit the Soft Power Community Project, your chance to give something back.

Suggested Itinerary
Day 1: Kampala (Uganda)
After arriving on the overnight flight from London, our first day is spent in Uganda`s capital city. There is the chance to explore and shop, as well as relax at the campsite after your flight. In the evening, we will enjoy a meal out at one of the excellent local restaurants.
Day 2: Kibale Forest (Uganda)
An early start will take us west to the town of Fort Portal and the
Kibale Forest Primate Reserve. We camp in the forest itself and if
we are lucky the Colobus monkeys will be visible in the high trees
around the camp.
Days 3-4: Queen Elizabeth National Park (Uganda)
In the early morning, we enter the Forest and meet up with our
guides to track Chimpanzees in the wild - an experience limited to
very few areas of East & Central Africa. After lunch we will
head to the Queen Elizabeth National Park and enjoy an afternoon
game drive on the way to our camp on the Mweya Peninsula. The next
day is spent exploring the park on game drives and game-viewing
boat cruises. The park is home to lion, elephant, hippopotamus,
waterbuck, crocodile, buffalo, warthog and hundreds of other
species of animal and bird life.
Day 5: Kigali (Rwanda)
The following morning we drive south and cross the border into
Rwanda and drive to the capital Kigali. We visit Hotel Rwanda for
some sundowners before we sample the city's restaurants and
nightlife.
Day 6: Ruhengeri (Rwanda)
We take a morning tour of the city which ends at the Genocide
Memorial Centre. Your excellent local guide will give you an
insight into Rwanda's past and the moving Memorial Centre is a
testament to the living history that continues in this country
today.
This afternoon's drive is one of the most beautiful on the trip,
you will see why they call Rwanda the Land of a Thousand Hills...
An early night before the big day tomorrow...
Day 7: Gorilla Tracking (Rwanda)
Despite the beauty of the jungle and mountain scenery, it is the
interaction with the Mountain Gorillas that will undoubtedly be the
highlight of your tour. The group will meet with experienced
trackers and guides in the morning, who will give a safety briefing
before heading into the forest. The track can take anything from 30
minutes to 6 hours so come prepared. But once you have experienced
these wonderfully playful creatures, you will agree that it is more
than worth every step.
Day 8: Kisoro (Uganda)
A spare day which can be used to climb one of the many volcanoes
that make up the Virunga Range, or take a day trip to visit Lake
Kivu. We will make our way over to Kisoro, a border town of note,
located just a few kilometres from both Rwanda and DRC.
Day 9 : Lake Bunyonyi (Uganda)
Today we enjoy yet another scenic drive down to the Muko forest
where you will board a local pirogue boat for a trip across the
beautiful Lake Bunyonyi. We camp at the water's edge: gaze out from
your tent over the Lake, the birdlife and you may even catch a
glimpse of an otter playing in the bay.
Day 10 : Lake Bunyonyi (Uganda)
A full day to relax at the Lake and take advantage of all the
activities on offer. Of particular interest is the Edirisa Project
based at Bufuka Primary School close to the Camp. The project
outlines (among other things) the local kids views of the outside
world and the tourists that come from there. This is often as
entertaining as it is insightful. In term time there is a good
chance of a game of football against the youngsters, just beware
the sloping pitch!
Day 11: Jinja (Uganda)
The morning can be spent on a canoe safari with a local
fisherman/guide exploring the Wetlands. The highlight of this trip
is the chance to spot a Shoebill Stork, one of the rarest birds in
this part of the world.
After lunch we drive via Kampala to Jinja and the Source of the
Nile.
Days 12-14: Jinja (Uganda)
Jinja is the source of the River Nile and we travel a short way
down-river to our beautiful campsite high up on the banks of the
river, overlooking the rapids of the Nile. There are many
activities to enjoy, from Grade 5 white-water rafting to
Eco-sensitive quad-biking tours through villages and along the
banks of the river.
We spend 3 full days in Jinja, with the option on day 2 to visit
the Soft Power Community Project. This is a participatory
educational project supported by Face Africa. Their focus is on pre
and primary education for under-privileged kids in the region
(especially AIDS orphans). To date two pre-schools have been funded
and built to full functionality by overland companies and
passengers.
