Self Drive Namibia - The Northern Route

You will watch the sun create a golden-hued dawn over the massive dunes in Sossusvlei and retreat to the refreshing coolness of Swakopmund for a couple of days to enjoy the German colonial architecture, fine restaurants and activities on offer. A visit to Damaraland in search of the elusive desert elephants is followed by three days in Etosha - one of Southern Africa's premier Game parks.

Suggested Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Windhoek
Day 1: Arrival in Windhoek

Arriving on the overnight flight from London, you will be met and transferred to your Guest House in Windhoek. Your vehicle will be delivered to you and you will be given a briefing on driving in Namibia (techniques, local customs etc) as well as the opportunity to ask questions on your itinerary.


Day 2-3: Sossusvlei
Day 2-3: Sossusvlei

Drive south and west out into the wild expanses of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The journey is scenic in the extreme and you will arrive at your lodge on the edge of the desert in the afternoon. An excursion to Sossusvlei is a must: surrounded by soaring sand dunes, your guide will explain the history of the geology of the area as well as the Bushmen and Nama people who used to inhabit it. Climb a dune for an awesome view, before returning to the lodge to cool off in the pool.


Days 4-6: Swakopmund
Days 4-6: Swakopmund

The drive takes you north and west through the heart of the Namib-Naukluft to the Atlantic Coast at Walvis Bay. Stop to check out the incredible birdlife in the lagoon before heading north to the pleasant colonial town of Swakopmund. You have a couple of days here to take advantage of the many activities on offer - from dolphin boat trips to sand-boarding and skydiving. There are many wonderful seafood restaurants, and don't miss the half-day tour to the local township for a great insight into life in present day Namibia.
